Do I find a manual car for my Fiance to try? Rentals are a wasteland of automatics unless I want to spend $300 on an exotic... No thank you on that. Only friends with one are far away.

This is suprisingly tough. I've only ever owned autos (flame suit: ACTIVATED) out of neccesity always wanted to have some serious time with a manual. Had to borrow a friends car with stick for a few weekends to get the hang of it. I don't really have the heart to role up to a dealership and ask for a test drive so that I can learn stick.

Test drive one, make sure you and her both go, make sure it's a 2 seater or the back seats are super ass tiny so the salesman will not go with you.

I may need a gun for self defense, but I dont need it yet, so why get one?
maybe when she needs the manual, she REALLY needs it/its an emergency, and doesnt have time to learn at that moment.

That's unlikely to happen. There are events in both examples that would increase the chances of needing either (move to a undesirable area, recent string of break-ins, buying a manual car, etc.). Until something happens that increases those chances, why rush it? Keep an eye out for opportunities, and jump if/when they show up, but if you're having that much trouble finding a manual car, there's no scenario outside a horror movie that she'll need to know how.
